Statement regarding BP’s land purchase at Cherry Point

January 10, 2024

RE Sources is aware of BP’s recent activity at Xwe’chi’eXen (Cherry Point), and we are monitoring development plans there as we have for decades. We understand the need for an energy transition that will include an evolution of operations at the Cherry Point refineries. At the same time, we are concerned with BP’s lack of meaningful consultation with Lummi Nation prior to the acquisition of land at Cherry Point given its profound cultural importance to the Lummi people.

We are also concerned about potential impacts of any future development on the protected marine ecosystems at Cherry Point, including the imperiled Cherry Point herring stock. Thankfully, the Cherry Point Amendments passed in 2021 prohibit new fossil fuel refineries, transshipment facilities, coal plants, piers, and wharfs in the Cherry Point industrial zone.

RE Sources will continue to track any new developments at Cherry Point related to this purchase and throughout the industrial zone.
