More info

In the coming weeks, communities in Anacortes and Skagit County have opportunities to help achieve a more sustainable and resilient future for Fidalgo Island, and to chart a course through the coming decades toward a net-zero-emission society. A key step in the 2025 Comprehensive Plan update process is happening the day after Earth Day!

On April 23rd at 6:00pm there will be a public hearing on new proposed policies for the City of Anacortes Comprehensive Plan, specifically amendments to the Environment & Conservation chapter and for a new chapter on Climate Change Mitigation & Adaption. The City is accepting written comments on the proposed drafts from now until April 23rd.

Public meeting — City of Anacortes Comprehensive Plan (Environment & Conservation chapter)

The new Climate Element of the Anacortes Comprehensive Plan promotes community leadership, public awareness and well-being in responding to the challenges of climate change. The proposed goals strive for climate resiliency in buildings, transportation systems, urban forests, cultural resources and the local economy. They promote energy efficiency, alternative transportation and walkability, vehicle electrification and alternative fuels, natural disaster preparedness and emergency response, and protecting public water infrastructure.

For an overview and more materials, including a greenhouse gas inventory and climate risk vulnerability assessment, check out the interactive Climate Element explorer at Planacortes.com.

Better planning comes with the participation of local residents who care about their local community. City officials want your feedback! Encouragement and/or constructive criticism is welcome and invited.

With so much taxing our attention these days, it’s easy to miss the narrow windows for public comment in local processes — will you help us spread the word to your network?
