DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust and partners for “What’s the Point?” a free\, family-friendly exploration of Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve. Investigate the shoreline with expert naturalists\, attend fascinating talks on local ecology and wildlife\, and connect with organizations dedicated to protecting our coastal treasures. This year the Whatcom MRC will have an intertidal exploration table at the shoreline\, where you can examine live tide‑pool species up close and learn how these remarkable organisms survive and thrive in dynamic coastal habitats. It’s a perfect day for curious minds of all ages to learn\, explore\, and get inspired—please remember to leave your four-legged friends at home! \nPresentation Schedule\n10:10 am: Plants\, birds\, and ecology with Pam Borso and Greg Green (leaves from parking lot).\n12:00 pm: Geological history tour with Doug Clark (meet at the beach).\n12:30 pm: Natural beach processes with Keeley Chiasson (meet at the beach). \nParking\nPlease park at 7039 Jackson Rd.\, Blaine\, and take the shuttle to Point Whitehorn Park. The first shuttle leaves the parking lot at 9:45 am\, and the last shuttle leaves the park at 1:15 pm. There are minimal parking spots available at the park. \nAccessibility\nThe park has an ADA accessible ¾ mile walk (packed gravel path) to viewpoints\, and there is a 0.1-mile non-ADA accessible walk down to the beach. There are no bathrooms down on the beach. \nNo pets or bicycles are allowed at the reserve.

DESCRIPTION:Curious about what the next phase of Bellingham’s waterfront cleanup looks like? Join us for a walking tour of the GP West site\, followed by an open house where folks can ask Ecology questions\, on Wednesday\, June 10th to find out! \nThe 74-acre Georgia-Pacific West cleanup site operated as a pulp and tissue mill from 1926 through 2007. In 2005\, the Port of Bellingham acquired the property from the Georgia-Pacific Corporation and took on the responsibility of cleaning it up. With phases one and two of the cleanup already completed\, phase three will address the remainder of the Chlor-Alkali Area\, where significant mercury contamination occurred. Before this phase begins\, though\, Ecology is accepting public comments on the site’s Consent Decree and Updated Public Participation Plan (from June 1 – July 1\, 2026). \nWalking Tour: June 10\, 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.*\n300 West Laurel St. | Please prepare for a 1-mile unpaved loop.\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\nOpen House: June 10\, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (with snacks)\nLocation: Find us at the white tent at the Portal Container Village on West Laurel St.\n*The walking tour is funded by an Ecology Public Participation Grant.
