SUMMARY:Paddle Tour of the Future Salish Landing Park
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the RG Haley and Cornwall Landfill active cleanup sites — future home of the Salish Landing Park! RE Sources\, City of Bellingham\, and the Dept. of Ecology will discuss how the area is being cleaned up and developed into a community park. \nJoin us at the CBC at 9:30 a.m. to get geared up and we will aim to launch our boats at 10:00 a.m. (weather permitting). We will paddle north 1.7 miles with some stops along the way to talk about Padden estuary\, stormwater outfalls\, Taylor Dock and marine habitat. \nAt Salish Landing\, we will witness the cleanup in action and learn about how the site got contaminated. We will then paddle back to northern Boulevard Park\, get out and stretch our legs and hear from the City of Bellingham about how the area will be developed into a park. DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust and partners for “What’s the Point?” a free\, family-friendly exploration of Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve. Investigate the shoreline with expert naturalists\, attend fascinating talks on local ecology and wildlife\, and connect with organizations dedicated to protecting our coastal treasures. This year the Whatcom MRC will have an intertidal exploration table at the shoreline\, where you can examine live tide‑pool species up close and learn how these remarkable organisms survive and thrive in dynamic coastal habitats. It’s a perfect day for curious minds of all ages to learn\, explore\, and get inspired—please remember to leave your four-legged friends at home! \nPresentation Schedule\n10:10 am: Plants\, birds\, and ecology with Pam Borso and Greg Green (leaves from parking lot).\n12:00 pm: Geological history tour with Doug Clark (meet at the beach).\n12:30 pm: Natural beach processes with Keeley Chiasson (meet at the beach). \nParking\nPlease park at 7039 Jackson Rd.\, Blaine\, and take the shuttle to Point Whitehorn Park. The first shuttle leaves the parking lot at 9:45 am\, and the last shuttle leaves the park at 1:15 pm. There are minimal parking spots available at the park. \nAccessibility\nThe park has an ADA accessible ¾ mile walk (packed gravel path) to viewpoints\, and there is a 0.1-mile non-ADA accessible walk down to the beach. Join us for a walking tour of the GP West site\, followed by an open house where folks can ask Ecology questions\, on Wednesday\, June 10th to find out! \nThe 74-acre Georgia-Pacific West cleanup site operated as a pulp and tissue mill from 1926 through 2007. In 2005\, the Port of Bellingham acquired the property from the Georgia-Pacific Corporation and took on the responsibility of cleaning it up. With phases one and two of the cleanup already completed\, phase three will address the remainder of the Chlor-Alkali Area\, where significant mercury contamination occurred. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in exploring the intertidal zone of Birch Bay with beach naturalists? Do you enjoy celebrating our water and the creatures that live in it? Come to Day at the Beach on May 30th\, at Birch Bay State Park! \nMay 30th | 10 a.m.-1 p.m.\nBP Heron Center\, 7290 Birch Bay Dr\, Blaine\, WA\n  \nBBWARM\, Whatcom CD\, and the Friends of Birch Bay State Park will be hosting a beach exploration and celebration event! You can find interactive booths from local organizations that care about our water\, explore the beach with expert naturalists\, enjoy refreshments\, and there will be activities for kids. The event will go from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The event is free and all are welcome! We hope to see you this May at low tide!
