Forest conservation celebration & hike to Bessie Timber Sale

September 21 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

person hiking through an old doug-fir forest with two dogs trailing behind

Join RE Sources, Center for Responsible Forestry (CRF), and the Sierra Club for a community event celebrating the permanent conservation of a mature forest in the Lake Whatcom watershed known as the Bessie Timber Sale! In 2023, a 575 acre block of mature forest that includes Bessie was put into conservation using funds from the Climate Commitment Act (CCA).

This celebration will include a 60 to 90 minute gathering with art, speakers, and music, followed by an optional hike to the Bessie forest area for those interested in exploring further. Children are encouraged at this family friendly event! We will create earth friendly art, games, and enjoy some beautiful singing. The hike is limited to 25 participants. We will reach out with more details if you are one of the first 25 to sign up for the hike.

September 21st, 11:00am to 12:00pm
Hike to Bessie Timber Sale from 12–4pm
Meet at the Ladies of the Lake reserve, south Lake Whatcom (map pin)

Consider signing up to carpool here after you RSVP!

Event Accessibility Notes:

  • There is no restroom available on site. Please plan accordingly.
  • The pre-hike event takes place in a cedar grove, about a 10-minute walk from the parking area. If this is a barrier for you, please contact the event organizers to organize a shuttle ride.

A successful community campaign stopped this sale in 2022, but very few of the hundreds of people who took action have had the opportunity to actually visit this beautiful and unique 100+ year old forest. This event is a chance to celebrate this successful project, and to raise awareness about why mature forest conservation using the CCA is WA’s best natural climate solution.

Hikers: The optional hike is a strenuous one, up an informal trail used primarily for mountain biking. Participants should be prepared to hike 4 miles round trip, with approximately 650 ft. elevation gain in the first ¾ mile.

This event is part of “State Lands September” an annual series of events organized by Sierra Club WA to help you explore, celebrate, and protect our state managed forests. Learn more about other events near you.
