OUR VIEW 3/30/06

RE Store project worthy whatever the location

The environmental group RE Sources and its offshoot the RE Store have been great successes for downtown Bellingham.

The organization announced recently that it is starting a $750,000 capital campaign to build a "Sustainable Living Center." The center would include the popular RE Store, which sells recycled building materials, and a library focusing on environmental and green building issues, educational exhibits, classrooms and workshop space.

The goal is to give the community a place to get information and tools to help them make lifestyle choices based on sustainable living ideals.

The organization needs to raise $750,000 in private capital to earn a $4 million financing package that includes low-interest loans and tax credit funding. It is trying to raise the money by December.

We suspect that it shouldn't have trouble raising the funds. The organization has had incredible success in our community as an environmental group aimed at community education. Its programs in the community and through schools throughout the county have greatly enriched the quality of environmental education here.

The next question will be: Where will the organization build its new center?

Officials said recently that they want to be part of downtown and the revitalization going on there. The RE Store has been very successful in its Old Town location on Holly Street and draws a lot of traffic to the area.

But it's possible the current site won't work for the new building. Because it is next to Whatcom Creek, pilings for any new building would have to be driven through unstable soils. That's an expensive proposition.

We wish the organization well in raising money, finding a home and building its visionary new center. Our community has a long love affair with things green and recycling, as the success of the RE Store proves.
