Orca recovery: Ensure the public has a say

Tell Gov. Inslee to involve citizens, not just government agencies, as we fight to keep Salish Sea orcas from extinction.

Dear Governor Inslee,

Thank you for being an orca recovery champion.

As you know, the Southern Resident Orca Task Force released their final Year 2 Recommendations; however, the Task Force could not reach consensus on a very important topic of how orca recovery will continue to be prioritized (Recommendation 42 on page 52 of the report). I write to ask that you support “Option 2: Create a new executive level team in Governor’s Office” as you consider your legislative and budget priorities for the 2020 Legislative Session.

Option 2 provides a clear forum and consultation process for the public to get involved with public Leadership Team meetings twice per year, similar to the Southern Resident Orca Task Force meetings. This structure provides the most accountability and transparency for the public compared to Options 1 and 3 which silo work in existing agency structures and provide limited opportunities for public engagement.
