The North Sound Baykeeper shows in the report, “Stormwater in the North Sound and Straits: Assessing the impacts and taking action,” that government leaders and the Washington State Department of Ecology
(Ecology) are not acting to prevent pollution from stormwater. Ecology, itself, acknowledges that stormwater is the leading contributor to water pollution in our urban waterways, yet does not enforce its own laws to help remedy the problem.

A Keeper is a full-time ombudsman whose responsibility is to be a public advocate for a given body of water. The Keeper system in the United States was started on the Hudson River in New York State by Hudson Riverkeeper John Cronin and Robert Kennedy Jr.

Today, there is a National Waterkeeper Alliance that includes over 170 Keepers around the country. Following in this fine tradition, the North Sound Baykeeper acts as the eyes and ears of the ecosystem and a voice for its protection.

The North Sound Baykeeper is a project of RE Sources and Puget Soundkeeper Alliance.

Internship positions are available with the Baykeeper Program
