A Statement of Principles Regarding the Cleanup of the Legacy Contaminant, Mercury

We, the undersigned, find that contamination of our community’s waters and lands with mercury, a persistent bioaccumulative neurotoxin, represents a long-term risk to the health of humans and other organisms. Allowing mercury to remain in the land and waters of Bellingham Bay and the New Whatcom area of Bellingham represents an unacceptable risk to the people of Bellingham, Whatcom County, and Washington State.

      Therefore, we urge the following:

      • Remove mercury contamination instead of containing it in place.
      • Clean up mercury in the water and on land to the most protective standard possible.
      • Use the most protective methods and technologies to remove mercury-contaminated sediments.
      • Dispose of mercury-contaminated sediments in an approved upland site.
